Trillium Drug Program (TDP)

Ontario residents who are not with Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) Program or OHIP+ can apply for Trillium Drug Program (TDP).

Who is Eligible

Ontario residents (individuals or families) with valid Ontario Health Insurance (OHIP) may apply, regardless of their income, if they do not have private insurance or their private insurance does not cover 100% of their prescription drug costs.

Applications are also available through most retail pharmacies or from a social worker. There is no cost to register with TDP, and the application takes only a few minutes to complete.

Choice of enrolment start date is important as it can affect deductible amount. Choose an enrolment start date that is before or on the same date of the prescriptions you want TDP to consider for eligibility. 

Medications Covered by the Trillium Drug Program

TDP covers the same medications as the ODB General Benefit Program. Exceptional Access Program (EAP) or Compassionate Review Policy (CRP) requests may be required for some GN medications (i.e., Rituximab). See Ontario Drug Benefit & OHIP+ for coverage details.

To expedite coverage of EAP or CRP-covered medications, the TDP application may be submitted at same time as EAP or CRP requests.

Deductible and Co-Payment

When a patient is enrolled in the TDP, coverage of medications is same as for ODB patients, except that they will have to pay yearly deductible based on household income and family size. As income is verified annually by income tax information, income tax returns for the household must be submitted by deadline every year to avoid processing delays.

Please also be aware that there is a small co-payment for each prescription obtained through the TDP after the patient’s deductible is reached. Some retail pharmacies may choose to waive or reduce this fee.

Trillium Drug Program and Private Drug Coverage

Registration with TDP does not jeopardize or interfere with private drug coverage. Patients with private coverage should continue to use it and apply for TDP assistance for drugs that are not covered or are only partially covered by their private insurance plan.
