Women with kidney disease need specialized care before, during and after pregnancy for the best outcomes for them and their babies. Women with kidney disease who need maternal healthcare include:
- women with different renal diseases
- women on dialysis
- women who are kidney transplantation recipients
Purpose
We are developing a model of care for standardized, timely and high-quality specialized care for women with kidney disease who need maternal healthcare.
Major Initiatives
Establish a Provincial Model of Care
- Introduced criteria across all Regional Renal Programs to standardize quality care for women with kidney disease who require pregnancy care or pre-pregnancy planning
Use Data to Support Planning, Decision-Making and Monitoring of Outcomes
- Established data requirements
- Introduced evaluation measures to drive monitoring and quality improvement
Make Sure Patients are Supported to Make Informed Decisions
- Developed a pregnancy and breast feeding fact sheet for patients to use with their health care team
- Developed a video series offering a look at the personal experiences of 2 women with a type of kidney disease called glomerulonephritis who go through pregnancy.
