Local Services

A wide range of kidney care services is available to people with chronic kidney disease in over 90 locations across Ontario. To make sure people receive care close to home, frequently used services are available in many or all Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs). Services used less regularly and highly specialized services are available at fewer locations to keep care as high-quality as possible.

About Kidney Service Locations

Kidney care services are delivered through a network of Regional Renal Programs, Each program has a designated hub hospital that delivers a variety of services, including complex procedures. Hub hospitals with multiple campuses may have dialysis units at multiple locations. Some Regional Renal Programs also have satellites located in hospitals or other healthcare organizations. Satellites generally provide a smaller range of services routinely needed by people with chronic kidney disease.

Some Regional Renal Programs also have offsite units. These are secondary units operated by the hub hospital in the community, such as in commercial spaces. There are also independent health facilities, which provide dialysis services. These are independently owned and operated in the community.

A person with chronic kidney disease who often visits a satellite or offsite unit may sometimes need a service not available there. In this case, the person may be referred to the hub hospital or another hospital within the network of Regional Renal Programs to get that service.
